Long Island is Horse Country

The Rutgers Equine Science Center is hosting an equine educational event, Horses 2017 on March 18-19, 2017. Our theme? “The Best of the Best!”  Experts from Rutgers and beyond will be sharing their knowledge with you all weekend. Got questions? They’ve got answers! Students interested in vet school will have a chance to ask current veterinary students questions about what it’s really like. Mr. Steve Karus, farrier from the Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine will talk about conformation and shoeing. You’ll learn about dentistry, ulcers, emergency care, pain management and more!

Of course there will be topics covering manure management, footing and how to improve farm management. Join us! All the information is on our website: http://esc.rutgers.edu/outreach-events/horses-2017/horses-2017-sponsors/

Thanks, we hope to see you there!

Vineyard Ride

2017 Date to be announced

Participants must pre-register and prepay to ride and participate in the wine tasting at the 3 vineyards.
We will visit: Martha Clara, Paumanok, and Jamesport Vineyards.
For our Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay riders, we will have an alternate fourth stop at - Diliberto
The trail ride and tasting will start promptly at 10 A.M. and will last for approximately 3 hours.
A luncheon will follow on the lovely grounds of Martha Clara Vineyards.
This opportunity will be limited to 60 equestrians. Once a group selection is made (First Vintage: Mainly walk with a little trot), Chardonnay: Walk Trot, possibly some canter, Cabernet: Walk Trot, Canter), it will be final and groups will close once we reach 20 riders.
Family and friends may “hilltop” (register without a horse) and will have an opportunity to participate by car but must pre-register and will not be admitted to the ride or to the tented luncheon without registering.
A pre-registration period will be open April 1st for NSHA, Old Field Farm, Ltd. and EELHA Members. Registration for the general public will open after April 20th depending on availability. Please make sure you are available for both June 4th and June 5th as we have had to use the rain date in previous years. There will be no refund for attendees who cannot attend.
In the interest of safety for all participants, it is strongly recommend that horses be familiar with trail riding and riders with trail etiquette. Unruly horses and or riders may be excused from the field without refund. Mounting blocks will be available at each vineyard for those who wish to dismount. We will taste several wines at each vineyard and you may remain on horseback to do so. Water will be available for horses and riders at each tasting stop. ASTM protective headgear is strongly recommended and a release form must be signed before departure. All riders must sign a release form.
Shutterbugs are welcome to photograph this event. The beauty of Long Island’s North Shore landscape, the vineyards, horses and people should serve as interesting subject material.
The tickets are $100 per person, are non-refundable, and include a light breakfast, wine tasting at each vineyard and a sumptuous gourmet luncheon. Once payment is received you will receive a confirmation letter with additional details. Checks should be made out to Old Field Farm, Ltd. Hill toppers, relatives and friends who would simply like to attend the lunch may do so for $65.
*Wine will be available for purchase at each vineyard (checks and CC accepted). A vineyard ride steward can take your order and payment at the vineyard and will transport your purchases back to Martha Clara Vineyards to be picked up during the luncheon. For additional information please contact: Old Field Farm at 631-246-8983.
